In the early 1800's, people started digging granite out of South Manoosnoc Hill to build foundations, street curbs, whole buildings, and other things granite was used for. The quarry was in operation until the very early 1940's, in which machinery and other artifacts were left behind, most notably, huge piles of granite that were cast away for defects. Very little of its past is still seen today, but most noticable (especially in the winter) are the carved sections of the hill, and aformentioned reject slabs and piles. Some exploring will turn up bits of the past, from machine parts, to cars (in the "Abandoned Things" board), and badly weathered access roads. This is a three part series, looking at the quarry close up: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSoH9MZOpKo <--- Part 1. Getting There, and some mining equipment www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwX68fD4AXI <--- Part 2.
